How long do tyres last?

But how long will the average set last without unexpected surprises such as an irreparable puncture or blow out?

How long do tyres last before you need a new set?

If your tyres are either over 5 years old, or have exceeded 25,000 miles, they should probably be changed as this is the point at which the rubber compound will likely begin to deteriorate.

Interestingly, your front tyres need to be replaced much sooner than your back tyres, with the average lifespan being just 20,000 miles, compared to 40,000 miles for your back set.

This is only a rough guide, however, and visual inspections by both you and a qualified mechanic should be conducted annually to ensure they do not become unsafe.

What affects the lifespan of a tyre?

There are multiple factors that can affect how quickly your tyre will deteriorate.

These include:

  • The condition of the roads you are driving on – (Not much you can do about this one!)
  • The quality of the tyre you buy – You’ve probably heard the saying ‘buy cheap buy twice’ and whilst cost does not always correlate directly to longevity of a tyre, there is certainly a benefit to doing your research and choosing a more premium option in some cases.
  • How you drive – Careful and sensible driving with limited severe breaking in particular can help to prolong the lifespan of your tyres.
  • Tyre maintenance – Look after your tyres and your tyres will look after you!

Signs you need a new tyre

If you see any of the following, no matter how old your tyres may be, it is time to get yourself some new tyres.

  • Low tyre tread depth – Driving with a tyre depth below 1.6mm is illegal and could land you with a serious fine or points on your licence. If your tyres tread falls any lower than 3mm, its time to get yourself a new set.
  • Budges or blisters – If you see cracks, bulges or blisters on your tyres, DO NOT attempt to drive the vehicle. The integrity of the tyre is compromised and its time to call a mobile tyre fitting Glasgow expert.
  • Weird noises – Weird noises coming from your vehicle is never a good thing, and squeaking or creaking noises could well suggest an issue with your tyres.
  • Vibrations – There are several reasons why your car may vibrate (all should be checked out by a mechanic) but is commonly an indication that there is an issue with you wheel alignment, something our mobile tyre fitters will be happy to help you with.

If you have spotted any of these issues, it is time to have your tyres checked or replaced, no matter what you have read about how long should tyres last. There are so many different factors involved in tyre deterioration that it is impossible to give a completely accurate predication about when a new set will be needed.

If you are at all unsure about if your tyres need to be replaced, simply get in touch with the experts at Mobile Tyre Fitters and arrange for us to come and take a look.
