2. Creating the Components

Once the rubber compounds are ready, they’re processed into the various components that make up the tyre:

The inner liner, an airtight layer of rubber that replaces inner tubes in modern tyres, is created first. Next, fabric plies are made by coating textiles like polyester with rubber. Steel wire is bundled together and encased in rubber to form the bead, which will secure the tyre to the wheel. The sidewalls are cut from sheets of rubber, while the tread pattern is extruded from rubber compounds specifically designed for road contact.

3. Building the Green Tyre

The assembly stage takes place on a tyre building machine. First, the inner liner and plies are wrapped around a drum, then the steel belts are added to stiffen up the tyre. The beads are positioned to make sure the tyre will fit correctly on the rim of the wheel, and the sidewalls are applied. Finally, the tread pattern and sidewall markings are added.

This unvulcanised assembly is known as a ‘green tyre’. It has all the elements in place but lacks the strength and durability of a finished tyre.

4. Curing (Vulcanisation)

The green tyre is then vulcanised in a curing press. This critical step involves placing the tyre in a mould where it receives its final shape and tread pattern. Using heat and pressure (typically around 170°C), the vulcanisation process transforms the soft, sticky rubber into a tough, elastic material.

The rubber compounds chemically cross-link during curing, binding all the parts of the tyre together and giving the tyre its final shape and characteristics. This is where the tread pattern becomes permanently set and the sidewall markings that provide information about your tyre are embossed.
